Ginataang Puso ng Saging


Ginataang Puso ng Saging or Banana Blossoms/Heart cooked in coconut milk is a simple and delicious Filipino dish, best served with fried fish. Ginataang Puso ng Saging is a great and flavorful variation of Filipino Ginataan dishes and takes less than 30 minutes to make.


This Ginataang Puso ng Saging is really easy to make and only few ingredients needed. Pork is usually part of the ingredients, but I used shrimps and it turned out really good! One of my favorite vegetable dish and can be easily cooked at home.

Banana blossom or puso ng saging are the buds that becomes the fruit of the banana plant. The banana blossom (soft part) is shredded and soaked in rock salt for about 10 minutes. The shredded banana blossom is then squeezed using the hand to release the bitter sap then rinsed well with cold water and drained before cooking.

Ingredients
  • 1 large banana blossom/heart, shredded
  • 1 tbsp. rock salt
  •  tbsp. canola oil
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 3 cloves of garlic, chopped
  • 1 chili pepper, seeded and sliced
  • 1 tsp fish sauce
  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • 1/2 lb shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1/4 cup water (if needed)
  • 1/4 tsp ground pepper
  • salt to taste


Instructions
  1. In a bowl, place shredded banana blossom and rock salt. Sir and let is stand for about 10 minutes. Using you hands, squeeze to release bitter sap. Rinse well in cold water and drain excess water. 
  2. In a wide pan, heat and add canola oil. Saute onion and garlic until limp for about a minute. 
  3. Add drained puso ng saging and stir. Cook for about 7-10 minutes. 
  4. Add chili pepper, fish sauce and coconut milk. Stir and simmer for 10 minutes over low heat. 
  5. Add shrimp and allow to cook for a minute. Stir gently and add more water if needed. Simmer until sauce thickens. 
  6. Season with ground pepper and salt to taste. Serve hot and Enjoy!
